Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving from a supplementary tool to a fundamental architect of natural science research. The integration of large language models, sophisticated multimodal systems, autonomous laboratories, and agentic tools is now actively assisting researchers across a spectrum of critical tasks, including in-depth literature analysis, complex coding, intricate image interpretation, experimental optimization, manuscript preparation, and even elements of the peer review process. While public discourse has predominantly focused on the potential for accelerated discovery, enhanced automation, and groundbreaking breakthroughs, the profound psychological implications of this transformative shift for the researchers themselves remain largely underexplored. This analysis posits that AI’s role in natural science must be understood not merely as a technological advancement, but as a significant reorganization of the psychological environment that underpins scientific work.

Drawing upon recent advancements in autonomous experimentation, AI-assisted writing and review, and established research on technostress, AI workplace anxiety, attitudes toward AI in professional settings, and the dynamics of human-AI delegation, this perspective proposes a comprehensive four-part framework. This framework is organized around four interconnected dimensions: labor visibility, identity stability, accountability under delegated cognition, and institutional climate. These dimensions are conceptualized as a theoretically grounded and inferential lens, the manifestation of which is anticipated to vary considerably across different scientific disciplines, specific research tasks, individual career stages, and diverse institutional settings. Furthermore, this analysis argues that the responsible adoption of AI in science should be evaluated not solely by metrics of speed or scale, but more critically, by its capacity to preserve human agency, maintain interpretive responsibility, foster developmental learning, and support sustainable scientific careers. A psychological perspective does not advocate for the stagnation of scientific progress; rather, it seeks to illuminate the human conditions under which AI-enabled science can retain its rigor, trustworthiness, and professional viability.

The Accelerating Integration of AI in Scientific Endeavor

The trajectory of artificial intelligence within natural science research marks a significant pivot, moving from specialized applications for data-intensive tasks to a central role in shaping the very fabric of discovery. In recent years, autonomous and self-driving laboratory systems have emerged as powerful demonstrations of integrated robotics, machine learning, optimization algorithms, and feedback loops operating within closed-loop research workflows. These advancements are particularly notable in fields such as materials science and biotechnology, where studies have showcased their efficacy (Szymanski et al., 2023; Canty et al., 2025; Fushimi et al., 2025; Singh et al., 2025). Concurrently, generative AI tools are increasingly being adopted for a wide array of scholarly activities, including the summarization of extensive literature, the organization of complex arguments, the drafting of scientific prose, the generation of code, and the support of various aspects of scholarly evaluation and review (Kharlamova and Stavytskyy, 2024; Cohen and Moher, 2025; Hysaj et al., 2025). This pervasive integration means AI is not only influencing the production of scientific knowledge but also significantly impacting the communicative and evaluative infrastructure through which scientific endeavors are judged and disseminated.

This rapid evolution is frequently characterized by narratives emphasizing efficiency and progress. Across discussions concerning self-driving laboratories, AI-assisted scientific writing, and AI-integrated research workflows, proponents highlight AI’s potential to accelerate the pace of discovery, alleviate the burden of routine tasks, democratize access to advanced analytical capabilities, and expand the scope of problems addressable by individual researchers or teams (Pyzer-Knapp et al., 2022; Abolhasani and Kumacheva, 2023; Zhang et al., 2025). While these claims hold considerable merit, they present an incomplete picture. They meticulously detail the potential gains for research systems but offer scant insight into the lived experiences of the researchers themselves. Scientific work, it must be recognized, is not merely a sequence of technical operations; it is also deeply intertwined with developmental processes, the construction of professional identity, and the navigation of ethical considerations. Researchers cultivate expertise through sustained practice, imbue authorship and peer judgment with profound meaning, and rely on established communities of recognition to validate their competence and trustworthiness.

The Psychological Underpinnings of AI Adoption

Consequently, AI’s role in natural science research must be viewed as a psychological transition as much as a technological one. When AI systems undertake tasks historically associated with the formation of expertise and scholarly contribution, they inevitably alter researchers’ perceptions of their own value, redistribute accountability, and reshape how institutional expectations are interpreted. Research originating from organizational psychology and human-AI collaboration consistently demonstrates that AI-related job anxiety can adversely affect well-being, that AI-driven transformations can intensify job insecurity despite stimulating adaptive behaviors, and that the integration of AI may introduce novel forms of technostress if governance and support structures are not clearly defined (Brougham and Haar, 2018; Tarafdar et al., 2019; Bankins et al., 2024; Park et al., 2024; Feng et al., 2025; Hagemann et al., 2025; Sha and Chai, 2025). Although a substantial portion of this evidence stems from non-academic workplaces, it illuminates critical mechanisms that are increasingly pertinent within laboratories, research groups, and scientific institutions. Therefore, the framework presented herein should be interpreted not as an assertion that these dynamics have already been fully established across all natural science settings, but rather as a theoretically informed account of pressures that are becoming plausible, observable, and amenable to empirical investigation in AI-rich research environments.

This perspective posits that the psychological significance of AI-enabled science can be elucidated through four analytically distinct yet interrelated dimensions: labor visibility, identity stability, accountability under delegated cognition, and institutional climate. Labor visibility pertains to whether human effort remains discernible within AI-mediated workflows. Identity stability concerns the continuity of professional self-concept and the trajectory of developmental learning. Accountability under delegated cognition addresses the inherent asymmetry between cognitive operations delegated to AI and the retained human responsibility for outcomes. Finally, institutional climate refers to the local norms, incentive structures, and governance frameworks that shape the interpretation and management of the other three dimensions. Collectively, these dimensions offer a nuanced explanation for why AI can evoke feelings of both empowerment and destabilization within research settings. The central thesis of this article is that the future of scientific progress should be assessed not solely by the capabilities of AI, but by the types of researchers, research practices, and research lives that AI-rich systems ultimately enable.

The Urgency of a Psychological Framework in a Rapidly Evolving Landscape

The accelerated pace and inherent opacity of AI diffusion within the scientific community underscore the pressing need for a psychological lens. Individual researchers are frequently compelled to experiment with nascent AI tools before established disciplinary standards have been codified. This creates a temporal dissonance: adoption outpaces norm development. In such circumstances, uncertainty itself becomes a significant burden. Researchers must not only acquire proficiency with new systems but also infer which applications will ultimately be deemed skillful, negligent, ethical, or professionally detrimental. This burden is particularly acute in highly competitive environments where funding, publication timelines, and career progression are contingent upon subtle indicators of competence. It is important to note that these pressures are unlikely to be uniform; AI adoption varies significantly across laboratory sciences, computational fields, interdisciplinary teams, and tasks focused on publication. Consequently, the framework proposed here is intended as a cross-contextual analytical tool rather than a claim of identical impacts across all natural science domains.

A psychological perspective is also indispensable given the cumulative and developmental nature of scientific training. The progression from student to independent researcher is predicated on repeated exposure to tasks that, while sometimes inefficient, are fundamentally formative. These include extensive reading, the iterative drafting of manuscripts, meticulous debugging of code, rigorous testing of interpretations against recalcitrant evidence, and the critical skill of avoiding overstatement of conclusions. If AI systems compress these essential stages without a corresponding redesign of mentorship and evaluation paradigms, institutions risk preserving output volume at the expense of the foundational conditions under which expert judgment is cultivated. The critical question, therefore, is not whether AI should be utilized, but whether the surrounding academic culture can effectively distinguish between genuinely productive augmentation and the insidious erosion of scientific development.

This concern is amplified by the increasing visibility of AI within the very act of scientific writing. Recent studies indicate that the use of large language models is already detectable in a substantial proportion of scientific papers, with a particularly rapid escalation observed in certain fields and publication contexts (Liang et al., 2025). As AI becomes more prevalent in drafting, refining, and reviewing scientific texts, researchers are compelled to navigate not only technical utility but also complex issues of authenticity, disclosure requirements, the calibration of trust, and the potential for reputational risk (Al-Hashimi, 2026).

AI’s Transformation of the Scientific Work Architecture

The scientific significance of AI extends far beyond mere text generation or the provision of general-purpose assistive tools like large language model chatbots, code assistants, and agentic research interfaces. Autonomous laboratory platforms are already adept at integrating biological culturing, experimental measurement, data analysis, and iterative hypothesis refinement within biotechnology and materials science (Li et al., 2025). Simultaneously, researchers are increasingly relying on generative AI systems for literature exploration, coding support, the interpretation of complex figures, manuscript drafting, and assistance with the peer review process (Khalifa, 2023). This integration has profound psychological implications, as the established markers of scientific competence are becoming increasingly unstable. In earlier research cultures, being recognized as a strong scientist often entailed demonstrating depth of knowledge, patience, interpretive reliability, and the capacity to meticulously navigate uncertainty. While these qualities remain important, they are increasingly being complemented by expectations of AI fluency, rapid synthesis of information, and a visible adaptability to machine-augmented workflows.

This paradigm shift can also be understood within a broader historical context. Scientific work has long been reshaped by institutional and technological transformations, including the proliferation of publication metrics, the intense "publish or perish" pressures, the establishment of computational and programming skills as baseline requirements, and earlier waves of digitalization and automation (Aragón, 2013; Maer-Matei et al., 2019; Hong et al., 2025). In this regard, AI is not the first force to alter the definitions of competence or productivity in research. What distinguishes the current moment is AI’s capacity to reach beyond instrumentation or calculation and to intervene directly in domains intrinsically linked to professional judgment and self-concept, such as reading, writing, coding, interpretation, and preliminary evaluation (Khalifa and Albadawy, 2024). The change, therefore, is not simply that scientists must learn to operate another tool; it is that the boundary between performing expertise and supervising machine-generated intellectual work is being fundamentally redrawn within core scholarly tasks.

Crucially, AI does not operate by simply replacing human effort; it also redistributes it. As Autor (2015) argued in the broader context of automation, technological change often alters task composition rather than leading to straightforward job elimination. In the scientific realm, this suggests that visible production may accelerate, while the invisible but essential tasks of supervision, verification, and boundary-setting may become more demanding. The outcome is not a simple subtraction of labor but a profound reorganization of where labor is situated, how it is valued, and how it is experienced by researchers.

A Psychological Framework for Navigating AI-Enabled Science

The intricate relationship between AI and the psychological landscape of scientific research can be synthesized through a four-dimensional framework. This framework, illustrated conceptually, highlights how AI permeates the architecture of science through autonomous laboratories, generative writing and coding tools, agentic workflows, and AI-assisted peer review. It organizes the analysis around the interconnected psychological dimensions of labor visibility, identity stability, accountability under delegated cognition, and institutional climate, thereby explaining the dual experience of AI as both enabling and destabilizing.

Labor Visibility: The Unseen Efforts in an AI-Augmented World

The first critical psychological dimension is labor visibility. Scientific work encompasses a multitude of intellectually demanding efforts that often remain weakly visible in the final outputs. These include the arduous process of reading conflicting studies, meticulously cleaning unusable data, debugging intricate and fragile code, identifying subtle artifacts in experimental results, critically assessing whether an elegant solution is in fact incorrect, and exercising the judgment to disregard a seemingly plausible but flawed outcome. AI systems can generate outputs with an appearance of speed and smoothness, but they do not obviate the fundamental need for human judgment. Instead, they often relocate this crucial judgment to a less visible layer of work, encompassing validation, provenance checking, the calibration of trust, error detection, and the rigorous oversight of epistemic quality.

This shift carries significant implications, as institutional reward systems tend to prioritize what is most easily quantifiable. A polished literature synthesis produced in mere minutes, for instance, does not negate the expertise required for its creation. Rather, it can obscure the underlying distribution of effort by shifting a larger proportion of the human contribution toward the critical tasks of checking, selecting, rejecting, and contextualizing machine-generated material. The concern, therefore, is not that AI obscures expertise in itself, but that it may render the locus of that expertise less apparent (Ribeiro et al., 2023). For example, an AI system might rapidly compile a coherent review of a rapidly evolving topic, yet the researcher must still critically ascertain whether key studies have been omitted, whether the cited evidence is being interpreted within the correct disciplinary context, whether the narrative overemphasizes consensus, and whether confident prose is masking underlying epistemic weaknesses (Steyvers et al., 2025). Similarly, code assistance may accelerate prototyping but conceal the essential labor involved in inspecting underlying assumptions and potential failure modes. Autonomous experimentation can compress the visible trial-and-error process while simultaneously elevating the importance of data stewardship, the careful design of experimental constraints, and the exercise of interpretive restraint (Casukhela et al., 2022; Ali et al., 2025). In essence, AI may diminish the visibility of human scientific labor precisely in those areas where human judgment remains most vital.

The psychological consequence of this diminished labor visibility can be a "recognition mismatch." Researchers may continue to invest intense effort, but in ways that become less legible to supervisors, committees, and the broader institution. Over time, this weakens the perceived correlation between effort and esteem, potentially fostering fatigue, cynicism, or a pervasive sense of disposability. This issue is particularly acute for early-career scientists, as many foundational abilities are honed through the very tasks that AI now appears to streamline. A psychologically informed approach to AI adoption must therefore consider not only the time saved but also which forms of expertise are displaced from view and which forms of human contribution may no longer be clearly recognized or rewarded.

Identity Stability: Navigating Professional Self-Concept in an AI Era

The second dimension is identity stability. Scientific research is not solely the production of knowledge; it is also a crucial process for the formation of a professional self. Scientists evolve into careful readers, skeptical interpreters, resourceful coders, and responsible authors through repeated cycles of practice, feedback, and recognition. AI can destabilize this developmental process when it undertakes tasks that have historically served as crucial markers of emerging competence. Moreover, AI distinguishes itself from earlier research technologies by acting not only on the material or computational environment of science but also on the symbolic activities through which the professional self is constructed. While earlier tools often altered data collection, processing, or modeling, generative and agentic AI also intervene in drafting, summarizing, coding, explaining, and reviewing – activities that many researchers intrinsically associate with their own intellectual authorship (Hu et al., 2025). Consequently, AI possesses the potential to alter not only workflow efficiency but also the subjective basis upon which professional identity is built.

This issue may be particularly pronounced for junior researchers. Literature synthesis, exploratory coding, initial manuscript drafting, figure preparation, and preliminary data analysis have long served as vital spaces where young scientists both learn and demonstrate their value. When these domains become partially automated, the pathway from effort to a stable professional identity can become less clear. The concern here is theoretically grounded rather than definitively established across all research settings: if work that once served as a crucial developmental site is increasingly delegated to AI, the formation of competence, confidence, and professional self-understanding may become more fragile.

Recent studies suggest that individuals’ reactions to AI in the workplace are multifaceted, encompassing not only perceptions of utility and quality but also anxieties, job insecurity, and considerations of perceived humanlikeness (van den Broek, 2025; Yadav et al., 2026). Within academic settings, proficiency with AI is also emerging as a significant reputational signal. Researchers may thus feel compelled to publicly embrace AI as the vanguard of progress, even when their personal experiences are ambivalent. This can lead to identity dissonance: a scientist might publicly champion AI as the language of innovation while privately harboring concerns that reliance on it diminishes originality, authorship, or autonomy. At present, these identity implications should be considered plausible extensions of current trends, requiring direct empirical examination within research-training environments.

The fundamental point is not that AI inherently undermines scientific identity. Rather, identity becomes less stable when institutional symbols and lived developmental experiences begin to diverge. If institutions persist in rewarding polished outputs without clearly articulating what constitutes meaningful human contribution, they risk cultivating scientists who are outwardly productive but inwardly uncertain about the foundational basis of their professional value.

Accountability Under Delegated Cognition: The Human Responsibility in AI’s Shadow

The third dimension is accountability under delegated cognition. AI empowers researchers to offload significant portions of tasks such as literature searching, drafting, coding, pattern recognition, and decision support. While such delegation can be rational and beneficial, the ultimate responsibility for scientific integrity remains firmly with humans. Authors, reviewers, principal investigators, and institutions continue to bear accountability for errors, confidentiality breaches, provenance issues, interpretations, and ethical judgments.

This inherent asymmetry introduces a distinctive psychological burden. When a cognitive process is delegated to AI, but full responsibility for the outcome is retained by the human user, the task is not uniformly simplified. Instead, it often reconfigures the human role into one centered on supervisory cognition: monitoring AI outputs, interrogating their underlying basis, making critical decisions about when to rely on them, and determining when intervention or rejection is necessary (Elish, 2025). Researchers are compelled to ask whether an AI-generated output is useful, whether it is trustworthy, whether it contains fabrication or distortion, whether its origin can be defensibly disclosed, and whether reliance on it could lead to reputational harm. In this context, AI frequently creates a need for supervisory cognition rather than providing pure cognitive relief.

Research on human-AI advice-taking and productive delegation offers valuable insights here. Effective collaboration hinges less on blind acceptance and more on careful calibration, selective reliance, and the establishment of well-defined boundaries (Dietvorst et al., 2018; Fügener et al., 2022). Concurrently, studies on large language model calibration reveal that individuals often overestimate the reliability of fluent machine outputs, particularly when accompanying explanations are confident or elaborately presented (Steyvers et al., 2025). This combination of factors poses a significant risk within science, where linguistic polish can be erroneously equated with epistemic soundness.

Concerns about accountability extend beyond individual cognition to encompass scientific ethics and governance. Questions regarding disclosure policies, confidentiality in peer review, data sensitivity, and acceptable AI use cannot be resolved by technical convenience alone. Qualitative research on AI ethics in scientific research further suggests that ethical dilemmas arise not only from the inherent capabilities of AI models but also from the institutional arrangements within which these capabilities are deployed (Jeon et al., 2025). Scientific work has always involved a degree of oversight regarding how knowledge is produced, but AI intensifies this reflexive burden by rendering the production process itself more opaque, distributed, and partially externalized to systems whose internal operations, training data, or provenance may be difficult for end-users to inspect directly (Bommasani et al., 2024). For natural science researchers, the psychological result is a persistent form of boundary management: they are not only engaged in conducting science but are continuously monitoring the legitimacy and integrity of how that science is being conducted.

Institutional Climate: Shaping the Experience of AI in Research

The fourth dimension is institutional climate. The adoption of AI is never experienced in an operational vacuum. Its psychological effects are profoundly shaped by local norms, incentive structures, clarity of governance, and informal expectations. In supportive environments, AI may be framed as a valuable tool for reducing drudgery, expanding access to research capabilities, and redirecting researcher effort toward more intellectually demanding and meaningful reasoning. Conversely, in highly competitive environments, the same AI tools can become benchmarks against which researchers are measured, subtly raising expectations while leaving uncertainty and responsibility largely intact. Institutional climate, therefore, functions as a contextual condition that shapes the meaning and impact of the other three dimensions, rather than acting as a redundant explanation.

A growing body of research corroborates this dualistic nature of AI’s impact. Organizational studies indicate that AI is experienced by workers as both an opportunity and a source of strain, with the specific manifestation depending heavily on the context, implementation strategy, and the distribution of control (Hornikel et al., 2021; Greaves and Colucci, 2025). AI workplace anxiety has been demonstrably linked to reduced life satisfaction through the exacerbation of negative emotions (Feng et al., 2025). Furthermore, digital-AI transformation can heighten job insecurity, even while simultaneously triggering adaptive behaviors such as job crafting (Sha and Chai, 2025). Qualitative evidence concerning generative AI and technostress similarly suggests that these tools often alter work less by eliminating tasks and more by shifting the focus toward monitoring, verification, and a constant need for adaptation (Chang et al., 2024).

For the scientific community, this implies that AI can evoke feelings of being simultaneously enabled and threatened. Researchers may appreciate the assistance provided by AI tools while harboring a suspicion that institutions will simply respond by raising output expectations further. They may adopt AI to maintain competitiveness while resenting the implicit norm that requires them to be perpetually faster, more fluent, and more adaptively available to new AI-mediated workflows. Here, "availability" refers less to literal round-the-clock connectivity and more to the expectation that researchers must remain continuously responsive to evolving toolchains, actively monitor AI-supported processes, and update their practices whenever the technological baseline shifts (Kukulska-Hulme, 2012). If the use of AI in writing, analysis, and evaluation remains ambiguous, the scientific culture may gradually transition from collegial trust toward a low-grade, pervasive defensive vigilance. Researchers may begin to question whether peers, reviewers, or competitors are being held to the same standards, or whether hidden automation has become an unspoken competitive advantage. Once such questions become routine, the emotional infrastructure of scientific inquiry becomes increasingly fragile.

Transitioning from Replacement Anxiety to Informed Agency

The psychological pressures associated with AI in scientific work can accumulate into chronic strain if they are not adequately moderated. However, these pressures can be redirected toward informed agency when institutions proactively provide AI literacy, establish transparent disclosure norms, offer robust mentorship, and implement evaluation reforms. The public discourse surrounding AI in science often oversimplifies this dynamic into a stark binary: either AI will render researchers obsolete, or it will serve as a harmless assistant. Neither of these positions adequately captures the nuanced reality. AI does not need to eliminate entire professions to fundamentally alter the emotional and psychological landscape of research. It can achieve this by reshaping recognition systems, shifting competence signals, altering developmental pathways, and modifying institutional expectations of continuous adaptability.

At the same time, adaptation should not be romanticized. While some researchers will undoubtedly leverage AI as a source of enhanced leverage, creativity, and improved work design, it would be ethically misguided to embrace chronic insecurity as a default engine of modernization. A sustainable scientific profession cannot be built upon anxiety as its primary motivational structure (Jeffrey and Matakos, 2024).

A more constructive alternative lies in fostering informed agency. Researchers require comprehensive support systems that enable them to transition from a state of diffuse threat to one of calibrated control. This support extends beyond mere tool proficiency to encompass a broader understanding of AI’s capability limitations, the risks of hallucination, effective uncertainty communication, domain mismatch issues, privacy constraints, disclosure norms, and the psychological pitfalls of both overtrust and undertrust. It also necessitates preserving the legitimacy of selective, critical, and even minimal AI use. A healthy scientific culture should not equate sophistication with maximal adoption. Instead, it should cultivate an environment that allows for reasoned judgment regarding when AI genuinely enhances rigor, when it merely accelerates low-value output, and when it introduces unacceptable epistemic or ethical risks.

Conclusion: Redefining Scientific Progress in the Age of AI

AI is fundamentally reshaping natural science at multiple levels: methodology, workflow, communication, and evaluation. Its most profound significance, however, lies in its capacity to reorganize the psychology of being a researcher. It alters what labor is visible, what expertise feels stable, how accountability is experienced, and how institutions distribute trust and exert pressure. If these psychological dimensions are neglected, scientific progress may come at an unacknowledged emotional and developmental cost. It is important to reiterate that the impact of AI is not uniform across all natural science fields. The framework presented is expected to manifest differently across disciplines, career stages, task ecologies, and institutional settings, and thus should be viewed as a structured lens for comparative analysis rather than a universal claim of uniform impact.

The challenge, therefore, is not to defend a pre-AI past or to passively surrender to automation as an unquestioned future. Instead, it is to actively design research cultures in which human agency remains meaningful and central within AI-rich environments. This imperative necessitates interventions that directly address the four identified dimensions. For labor visibility, institutions must champion the recognition of verification, supervision, and epistemic quality-control work, rather than solely rewarding fast, easily visible outputs. In terms of identity stability, mentorship and training systems must be preserved to offer developmental opportunities in reading, drafting, coding, and interpretation, rather than treating all friction as mere inefficiency. For accountability under delegated cognition, AI literacy should be conceptualized as a collective support system that includes trust calibration, standardized disclosure practices, and clear boundary setting, rather than an individualistic project of self-defense. Finally, for institutional climate, policies governing authorship, disclosure, peer-review assistance, and data governance must be sufficiently explicit to mitigate moral fatigue and reduce the burden of constant "boundary-guessing."

This framework also serves to catalyze a more focused empirical agenda. Future research could investigate these dynamics across multiple levels of analysis, including individual researchers, research groups, doctoral and postdoctoral training environments, and institutional policy regimes. Candidate variables for study include perceived labor recognition, the invisibility of validation work, identity insecurity, developmental role ambiguity, the burden of delegation, trust calibration, disclosure uncertainty, and the perceived institutional permission to use AI cautiously or selectively. Mixed-methods designs, integrating surveys, interviews, comparative institutional analyses, and field-based qualitative inquiry, are likely to be particularly effective in testing the broad applicability of this framework and identifying its boundary conditions. Ultimately, a psychological perspective does not impede innovation; rather, it fosters more sustainable and human-centered innovation. By adopting such a perspective, we can move beyond simply asking what kinds of discoveries AI may enable, to critically considering what kinds of researchers – and what kinds of research lives – scientific institutions will continue to foster and make possible.
