The increasing integration of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in higher education has presented both opportunities and challenges for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A recent study investigating Saudi EFL majors has shed light on the critical role of self-regulated learning (SRL) constructs in predicting academic performance within these digital classrooms. Drawing upon Zimmerman’s (1989) foundational theory of self-regulated learning, the research underscores that students who actively engage in goal setting, time management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation are more likely to achieve academic success in virtual settings. The findings suggest that developing these metacognitive skills is paramount for effective online learning. The Rise of Virtual Learning in Saudi Higher Education The landscape of higher education in Saudi Arabia has seen a significant shift towards virtual learning platforms. Driven by technological advancements and the need for flexible educational delivery, Saudi universities have increasingly adopted VLEs, such as Blackboard Collaborate, to support a wide range of courses, including EFL. This transition, accelerated by global trends and pedagogical innovation, allows students greater access to learning resources and facilitates remote participation. However, it also places a greater onus on learners to manage their own educational journeys. The study highlights that while VLEs offer convenience, they necessitate a higher degree of self-management, which can be a stumbling block for students not adequately equipped with self-regulatory skills. Previous research has consistently linked effective SRL strategies to improved academic outcomes across various educational contexts, and this study aims to specifically examine these dynamics within the Saudi EFL virtual learning sphere. Key SRL Constructs and Their Predictive Power The research focused on four core SRL constructs: goal setting, time management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation. These were identified as independent variables, with the academic performance of Saudi EFL majors in virtual courses serving as the dependent variable. Academic performance was operationalized as students’ cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA), a widely accepted metric for academic achievement. Goal Setting: The study found that Saudi EFL students generally demonstrate a robust capacity for goal setting. With a mean score of 3.86 out of 5, participants indicated a strong tendency to define learning objectives, prioritize tasks, and outline their study plans. This aligns with established theories positing goal setting as a primary motivator, driving focus and efficient resource utilization. However, the research also noted a less consistent application of documenting these goals, suggesting a reliance on cognitive processes rather than explicit written strategies. This observation implies that incorporating structured goal-setting features within VLEs could further enhance student engagement and academic outcomes. Time Management: While participants reported moderate engagement with time management strategies, this construct emerged as slightly less consistently applied compared to others. The mean score for time management was 3.54, indicating that students attempt to allocate dedicated study time and adhere to deadlines, but their ability to consistently maintain these practices was not as strong as in other SRL areas. This finding resonates with existing literature, which often identifies time management as a challenging aspect of SRL. Potential contributing factors in the Saudi context could include domestic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, or varying levels of technological proficiency. Despite this, time management still showed a moderate positive correlation with academic performance (r=0.38), underscoring its importance, though perhaps not as a sole determinant of success in the same way as metacognitive skills. The study suggests that the quality and focus of study practices may be more influential than simply the amount of time spent studying. Self-Monitoring: Emerging as the most significant predictor of academic performance, self-monitoring proved to be a crucial metacognitive skill for Saudi EFL learners in virtual environments. With a beta value of 0.31, students who actively monitor their comprehension, identify mistakes, and make necessary corrections demonstrated higher academic achievement. This finding is strongly supported by Zimmerman’s (2002) model, which emphasizes metacognitive monitoring as central to self-regulated learning, especially in the absence of immediate feedback. The asynchronous nature of virtual learning further amplifies the importance of self-monitoring, compelling students to take charge of their learning processes. Self-Evaluation: Self-evaluation also played a significant role, boasting a high mean score of 3.91. This construct reflects students’ tendency to review their learning accomplishments, assess goal fulfillment, and adjust their strategies based on their observations. The study suggests that Saudi EFL majors tend to rely heavily on their self-regulatory reflections, a trait possibly influenced by cultural educational practices that emphasize self-sufficiency. This highlights an opportunity for VLEs to be designed with features that promote self-evaluation, such as reflection cues, peer feedback mechanisms, and robust feedback systems, thereby encouraging learners to integrate self-reflection into their ongoing learning processes. Methodological Approach and Findings The study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey correlational method to examine the relationships between SRL constructs and academic performance. A questionnaire, adapted from the Online Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire (OSRLQ) by Barnard et al. (2009), was administered to 270 undergraduate Saudi EFL students at Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University. The questionnaire measured students’ self-reported engagement in goal setting, time management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation. Data Analysis: Statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis, was conducted using SPSS. The results revealed that all four SRL constructs were positively and significantly correlated with academic performance. Specifically, self-monitoring (r=0.48) and self-evaluation (r=0.46) showed strong correlations with academic performance. Predictive Power: The multiple regression analysis indicated that the four SRL strategies collectively accounted for 41% of the variance in academic performance. Self-monitoring emerged as the strongest individual predictor (beta = 0.31), followed by self-evaluation (beta = 0.27), goal setting (beta = 0.25), and time management (beta = 0.21). This reaffirms the critical role of metacognitive monitoring and evaluation in successful virtual learning. Implications for Educational Practice The findings of this study carry significant implications for educators, curriculum designers, and virtual learning practitioners in Saudi Arabia and similar contexts. Metacognitive Scaffolding: Integrating metacognitive scaffolding within virtual language courses is essential. Educators should design activities that encourage students to monitor their understanding, assess their progress, and evaluate their performance. This can be achieved through tools like reflective questions, progress dashboards, and self-assessment rubrics embedded within the VLE. Explicit SRL Strategy Instruction: Curriculum development should incorporate explicit instruction in SRL strategies. Modules dedicated to goal setting, time management, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation can enhance students’ strategic competence, bridging the gap between language acquisition and autonomous learning. Teacher Preparation Programs: Teacher training programs must emphasize the importance of SRL in virtual learning. Educators should be equipped with the pedagogical and technical skills to create supportive learning environments, guide students in goal setting, and facilitate self-reflection and evaluation. Cultural Considerations: Recognizing that Saudi learners may have been accustomed to more teacher-centered approaches, a gradual shift towards learner autonomy, supported by scaffolding, is recommended. This aligns with the observation that goal setting and time management were less consistently applied than metacognitive strategies. Limitations and Future Directions While this study provides valuable insights, it is subject to certain limitations. The focus on Saudi EFL students from a single university means the findings may not be universally generalizable. Future research could expand to diverse cultural and linguistic contexts. Furthermore, the reliance on self-report questionnaires introduces the potential for social desirability bias. Future studies could incorporate mixed-methods approaches, combining qualitative data and objective measures like learning management system (LMS) logs, to provide a more comprehensive understanding. Investigating the interplay between SRL, motivation, language proficiency, and cognitive load would also enrich the field. The study’s focus on only four SRL aspects also leaves room for exploring other potentially significant factors influencing academic performance in virtual settings. In conclusion, this research underscores the indispensable role of self-regulated learning in the success of Saudi EFL students within virtual learning environments. By fostering goal-setting, time management, and, most crucially, self-monitoring and self-evaluation, educational institutions can empower learners to navigate the complexities of online education and achieve their academic aspirations.
