Methodology and Participant Demographics To construct a robust dataset, the research team deployed an analytical cross-sectional survey utilizing stratified cluster sampling. The investigation targeted secondary school students enrolled in Grades 7 through 9 across twelve schools spanning eight distinct districts in Beijing, China. Data collection took place between February and May 2026 following rigorous administrative approvals and the issuance of an exemption determination by the Ethics Committee of the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports due to the study’s anonymous, non-interventional, and minimal-risk nature. Out of 1,100 distributed questionnaires, 921 valid responses were successfully retained after screening out missing data and repetitive patterns, yielding an impressive response rate of 83.7 percent. The final cohort was balanced evenly across demographics: 466 male students (50.6 percent) and 455 female students (49.4 percent), with a mean age of 13.92 years. The grade distribution featured 350 seventh-grade students, 170 eighth-grade students, and 401 ninth-grade students, with approximately 67.5 percent residing in urban environments and 32.5 percent living in rural areas. Participants completed a comprehensive five-part questionnaire assessing personal background information, KCPE through a 24-item scale, physical self-perceptions via the 30-item Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), exercise regulations using a 24-item metric based on self-determination theory, and subjective exercise experiences via the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (SEES). Unpacking the Statistical Findings Using advanced analytical software—specifically IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0 and AMOS 28.0—the researchers tested a hypothesized structural model. The statistical evaluation confirmed an exceptional model fit, highlighted by indices such as a chi-square-to-degrees-of-freedom ratio ($chi^2$/df) of 1.399, a Comparative Fit Index (CFI) of 0.997, a Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) of 0.996, and a Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) of 0.021. Through bootstrap resampling (5,000 iterations), the researchers validated specific indirect pathways. The standardized indirect associations through physical self-perception [0.052], autonomous motivation [0.110], and the serial pathway involving both mediators [0.034] were all statistically significant. Interestingly, supplemental models testing psychological distress and fatigue yielded no statistically significant path coefficients, indicating that the benefits of KCPE are concentrated on enhancing positive affective experiences rather than merely dampening negative symptoms. By fostering athletic ability, instilling proactive health behaviors, and encouraging sports morality, educators can help students build healthier self-evaluations regarding their physical competence and body image. When students perceive their physical abilities favorably, they are significantly more likely to develop autonomous motivation—exercising out of enjoyment, personal value, and self-endorsement rather than external pressure or guilt. This intrinsic drive subsequently unlocks higher levels of exercise-related positive wellbeing, creating a sustainable loop of regular physical activity and mental wellness.
