New findings from Rikkyo University shed light on the complex interplay of visual prediction errors and movement speed in generating these tactile illusions, suggesting a more nuanced understanding beyond current theoretical frameworks. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, indicates that both discrepancies between expected and actual visual movement (prediction errors) and the perceived speed of an object’s motion contribute independently to the sensation of resistance. Unraveling the Mechanisms of Tactile Illusions For decades, scientists have explored how our senses interact to create a coherent perception of the world. This multisensory integration is crucial for robust environmental understanding. However, this integration is not always straightforward; one sense can influence another in ways that deviate from physical reality. Pseudo-haptic sensations, where visual cues create the feeling of touch—such as weight, compliance, or friction—even without physical contact, exemplify this phenomenon. These illusions are often induced by manipulating the control/display (C/D) ratio, a measure of how an observer’s input (control) is translated into visual feedback (display). For instance, amplifying a physical movement in its visual representation can make an object feel lighter. Delays in visual feedback also play a significant role, generating a sense of resistance or heaviness. Two primary theoretical explanations have emerged to explain these sensations. The first posits that prediction errors—the mismatch between anticipated and actual sensory outcomes of an action—are the direct cause of pseudo-haptic experiences. This theory suggests that deviations in visual feedback from what the brain predicts trigger these illusory tactile feelings. The second theory, however, proposes a simpler mechanism: pseudo-haptic sensations arise from a learned statistical relationship between an object’s properties and its movement. Specifically, it’s believed that we learn that heavier objects tend to move more slowly. Therefore, when visual information suggests slower movement, our brains might infer heaviness or resistance, with prediction errors acting as a secondary consequence rather than the primary driver. A Novel Experimental Design to Isolate Factors To untangle these competing theories, a research team at Rikkyo University designed a sophisticated experiment. Participants were tasked with moving a cursor along a sine-wave-shaped pathway using a mouse. The cursor’s movement direction was a blend of the participant’s real-time mouse input and pre-recorded motion data from another individual. This manipulation of the control ratio allowed researchers to introduce spatial prediction errors without altering the overall magnitude of the cursor’s movement. Crucially, the speed of the cursor was kept proportional to the mouse movement in most instances. However, when the cursor entered a designated central zone on the screen, its speed was deliberately reduced by varying degrees, while still maintaining proportionality to the mouse input. This crucial step allowed for the independent manipulation of spatial prediction errors and effective movement speed. "We wanted to create a scenario where we could precisely control and then measure the individual contributions of prediction errors and perceived movement speed," explained Dr. Yosuke Suzuishi, lead author of the study. "By separating these factors, we aimed to determine if one mechanism was dominant or if they worked in concert." Key Findings: A Dual Contribution to Resistance The study involved 23 adult participants who navigated a virtual pathway. After each trial, they rated their perceived sense of resistance in their hands and their sense of agency over the cursor’s movement. The results from a detailed statistical analysis, employing linear mixed-effects models, revealed a significant impact from both spatial prediction error and the effective movement speed. The analysis confirmed that spatial prediction errors, quantified by the angular deviation between the participant’s mouse movement and the cursor’s displayed movement, significantly contributed to the reported sense of resistance. Simultaneously, the time taken to complete each trial, serving as an index of effective movement speed, also played a critical role. The researchers found that slower effective movement speed was strongly associated with a greater perceived sense of resistance. "Our findings indicate that both the unexpected deviations in movement direction and the perceived slowness of movement contribute to the feeling of resistance," stated Dr. Shinada, a co-author. "This suggests that the brain is using multiple visual cues to infer tactile properties." Interestingly, the sense of agency—the feeling of control over the cursor—was more strongly influenced by spatial prediction errors than by movement speed. This difference in how resistance and agency were perceived suggests that they might arise from distinct cognitive or neural processes. If agency directly reflects prediction errors, its differential response to the manipulated variables further supports the idea that resistance is not solely driven by prediction error. In virtual reality and gaming, for instance, generating realistic tactile feedback is a key challenge.
